Lab tools that connect design to a physical part

Equipment is useful when students can hold the consequence of a CAD decision.

A technician program needs a short path from model to part to measurement. In the Mechanical Engineering Technology labs, that path currently includes Creality K2 Plus combo printers, an Elephant Robotics MyBuddy 280, a myAGV logistics kit, and a Keyence IM-8010 instant-measurement system. Students use them in MET 101, 121, 122, 135, and 201.

The printers make wall thickness and assembly fit visible. The MyBuddy is a physical lesson in degrees of freedom, not a programming contest. The myAGV introduces the idea that code moves hardware. The Keyence system closes the loop: the drawing said one thing; the part said another.

When I request consumables or replacements, I record the item, course, and vendor link on the lab orders page so the department secretary has a stable URL instead of a buried email. Many shop supplies are purchased through Amazon.com using Associate links. Book-length support for the same courses is on the Amazon author store.

This article is original faculty writing on Notes from the Lab. The appointment, CV, and course list live on the professional homepage.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Earnings support the MCC Maker’s Club. Full disclosure.
